Let me start with a post that includes one of my favorites, John Mayer, playing a concert near my adopted home town of San Francisco. There was a fundraiser for the Bridge School at the Shoreline Amiptheater. The school was founded in 1986 by Neil Young’s wife Pegi Young and James Forderer, two parents of special needs children, and speech pathologist Marilyn Buzolich.

Here is a description of what the school does:

The Bridge School is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure that individuals with severe speech and physical impairments achieve full participation in their communities through the use of augmentative & alternative means of communication (AAC) and assistive technology (AT) applications and through the development, implementation and dissemination of innovative life-long educational strategies.

The Bridge School is an internationally recognized leader in the education of children who use augmentative and alternative communication and has developed unique programs and trained highly skilled professionals in the use of state of the art assistive technology.

How can you not support a cause like that?

What I loved finding when I was researching this post was this:

As a Bridge School Benefit tradition, the musicians perform with students of the school on the stage behind them, often turning their backs to the theater audience to entertain the children.

Now that’s a great tradition, and the kids must be thrilled. I know I was thrilled when Stevie Wonder showed up at my elementary school and played for us. It was inspiring and, frankly, unforgetable.

I’m glad to see some other young kids have a memory that will, hopefully, inspire them years on.
